LOVE GHAZAL
Baba Rehim Mashrab
translated by Aziz Isa Elkun

What shall I do, meander from town to town and visit your door?
I long to give my life away to you, princess, to leave it at your doorstep.

You have the scent of ravishing blooms like jasmine or white roses
There is also a glorious green pine tree that grows at your doorstep.

Your beauty has enraptured me, and is my life’s only jeopardy
My hunter searched for my beloved bird of life at your doorstep.

While I sought you, I was consumed with the lunacy of love
On seeing your fierce eyes, this pain felled me at your doorstep.

I am shedding tears night and day because of this cruel separation
The country is being destroyed, regardless of the blossom at your
doorstep.

The fire of your beauty had already caught and burnt Mashrab
I was like a moth drawn to a flame, my beloved, at your doorstep.
