James Ormsbee Chapin (July 9, 1887 – July 12, 1975) was an American painter and illustrator. He was the father of jazz musician Jim Chapin and grandfather of folk singer Harry Chapin.
Chapin executed numerous portraits of well-known public figures; at least five of his portraits were commissioned by TIME as cover art. His works have been acquired by many private collectors and for the permanent collections of the many museums. Largely due to his opposition to United States foreign policy in Southeast Asia, he moved to Canada in 1969, and died in Toronto in 1975.
